Pinot Noir 2021

Alcohol:

12.5%

Vinification Notes:

Whole clusters (stems intact) of Pinot noir sealed in a tank for two days (semi-carbonic maceration). After opening the tank, a mixture of punchdowns and pumpovers were used to gently extract tannin. At the midpoint of fermentation the juice was racked-and-returned (délestage) over the grape solids. Pressed prior to dryness and aged in neutral oak barrique for 9 months. Unfined. Unfiltered. Sediment expected.

Vineyard:

Pinot noir from Hawkeye Ranch, Redwood Valley, Mendocino County; dry farmed (non-irrigated), certified organic vineyard; gravelly loam soils.

Martha's Notes

Pete Johnson’s vineyard pocket in Redwood Valley continues to amaze me. In contrast to our warm and windy vineyards closer to Ukiah, Pete’s Hawkeye Ranch (and nearby Dicesare Vineyard) showcase this area’s dramatic daily temperature inversion, where cool overnight air pools from the mountain slopes into the rolling valley vineyards and provides daily relief, often in excessive of +/- 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Dry farming reduces yield and results in wines that have just the right amount of concentration, even at relatively lower extraction. Pinot noir 2021 is a wine that brings ample California sunshine with restraint.
