A BRIEF PRIMER ON NATURAL WINE
Makers have been crafting wine without additives for centuries, so what's all of this noise about natural wine? The post-war industrial food movement birthed a huge shift in the way we farm and eat. Although not discussed as much, this movement also shifted the way we grow grapes and drink.
Small natural wine producers (that’s us!) are working to shift the tides back towards a gentler way of making wine, tending our soils, our vines, and our communities. Natural winemakers nurture the ever-growing voice of transparency and sustainability in our agricultural system. We craft wines that place Mother Nature first, using our knowledge and expertise to support healthy farming systems and delicious moments of connection.
FROM THE VINEYARD
We enrich our soils with compost and allow beneficial insects to outcompete pests. We welcome plant growth below our vines: they serve as insect habitat in the spring and organic matter in the fall. Harvesting and pruning by hand ensures healthy grapes come into our cellar and long-lived vines remain in our fields.
TO THE CELLAR
We work with a light hand to allow the natural yeast and bacteria present on grape skins to kick-start each fermentation. Rather than adding tannin, acid, or stabilizing agents, we lean on the tannin and acid naturally present in our fruit. With careful aging we create vibrant, balanced wines.
ON YOUR TABLE
Natural wines tend to jive with your body the same way thoughtfully prepared produce can make you feel abuzz from the inside out. The same desire to preserve the taste of late summer tomatoes in sauce or sun-warmed berries in jam drives us to create friendly, uplifting wines for your table.
